DEMI, Inc. took several months of planning, writing, attempting to get hosting, and all around work. Through it all, many of the characters have remained fairly static. Helen of Torrence always was a little chubby and had odd hair, Daphne always had a little plant in her head (though her original name was Evadne), and Electra ALWAYS had daddy issues.
However, one character has had a significant change through out the planning process.
Antigone was always intended to be an ambiguous, and even androgynous character. I hadn’t planned for her to change so greatly, however. She went from your typical pretty girl to an uber butch warrior. So, please, join me as I present...
The Evolution of Antigone

The earliest incarnation of Antigone. She was actually in this form the first time I made the intro comic, which was later redone to reflect her new form. However, rather than scrap the entire design, I changed this girl into the main design for Daphne.

When I next drew Antigone, it was MUCH different from her first form. After deciding she would be a warrior, I realized she needed a shorter hair style. I went a bit to the extreme with this, making her hair sorter than many guys I know. However, a change from blond to auburn fit her, and the color stuck.

My favorite hairstyle for Antigone is, unfortunately, the only one I haven’t been able to reproduce. Hair is a major weakness for me. I’m going to spend most of my summer drawing, and a good amount of that time on hair. If all goes well, Antigone will have this style again by the time I, and the DEMI girls themselves, return to school.

WOAH!!! This brings back unpleasant memories.... This is the first time I tried giving Antigone her new hairstyle. To say the least, it’s bad. Gah...and she’s jot some major chub going.

Whew, this is embarrassing...I call this the spontaneous hair change comic. Notice how she goes from all messy to parted within the same strip. Yep...bad planning on my part.

God, I love this picture...one of the first times I tried a body that wasn’t standing up completely straight. Also the first time I tried doing a schoolgirl outfit. A little more work, and it’ll be ready for school time!

Love this one, too! A Cavewoman Antigone...you’ll be seeing her again, someday. This came along when I was thinking of designing clothes. I’ve actually been toying with the idea of making these clothes and selling them off, once the comic gets popular. You know, design an outfit for each storyline. If I can do it, I think it’ll go quite nicely...
Of course, there’s more to a character than just body and personality. You have to add a background and a few key items to really make them stick!

Antigone’s name came from the Greek play by the same moniker. However, there are some mark able differences between the girls past. For one, Antigone’s father isn’t also her brother. When it came down to it, though, she had to have SOME daddy issues. The natural choice was, of course, Ares.
While I make many jokes on the promiscuity of Zeus, I rarely touch on Ares. Myth has it that Ares ‘spends the night’ with the wives of men off at war. Naturally, this leads to some confusion the next morning, and nine months later, when you have some explaining to do to your hubby.

You’re a kick butt kind of girl, so you need a kick butt kind of ride, right? Giving Antigone a motorcycle helped give her an attitude, and add some speed to her character. (I always knew she’d be the ‘fast’ type) Not only that, not having a car helped augment her perilous financial situation.

Cant be a warrior without a weapon, eh? Now, I cant reveal too much about this sword, yet...but those of you familiar with mythology might recognize this sword on a string.

Now, the inspiration for this apartment comes from my uncle. He’s a architect and has the most awesome pad I’ve ever seen. Art all over the walls, models everywhere, and this great loft for his bedroom. I decided to transfer that to Antigone. She lives in a converted fire station, and actually gets the pole room! Add in a few workout areas, a place for working on her bike (and also for building new bikes, a side job she has) and you come out with the ultimate bachelorette pad.
Thanks for giving me some of your time to check out this very odd and hard won character. With any luck, she’ll achieve her purpose in the comic and leave a definite mark on the story!
